Our Kids and Gaming

It is important this day and age that we as parents police our children on the internet. Often times, our kids are left at home alone with free reign on the computer to do as they please unsupervised which can lead to your child being exposed to certain outside influences. Adults are working harder than ever trying to keep their households safe, but unfortunately do not have enough time to tend to their children at home, which in turn leaves them free to do as they please on the internet with no supervision. {Shock'N'Awe} as a community wants to educate parents and give them the information they need properly protect their children while on the internet.
As a community with strong family values and a commitment to a safe gaming environment we hope that you will read the guidelines for safe internet use below.
- Please set your main computer in an area that is always visible, such as the living room, kitchen or some other open place. You will be able to supervise those locations more effectively.
- Be sure that your children are supervised and have a time limit on the computer. Some children sit at the computer for countless hours and tend to put aside homework, chores and even playing outside with friends.
- Be sure you always check on your child when chatting on the Internet, be a parent, stand strong and let them know your watching.
- Be cautions of Peer-to-Peer file sharing programs. Such programs are Limewire, Bearshare and Ares Galaxy. These file sharing applications can leave your computer open to hacking and viruses, which could render your computer and network useless.
- Be sure you have updated Virus software on your computer such as Mcafee, Norton, Panda or AVG free by Grisoft.
- Check your computer for Bots and Adware. We recommend Adaware or Spybot Search and Destroy.
- Do not place a computer in a childrens bedroom as it is harder to supervise them when they are in the privacy of their bedroom.
- If your child has a laptop, be sure to have them use it somewhere that you can supervise them. Try to limit the use to only your home and not to take it to another friends house.
- If you notice signs of addiction to a certain game such as extended hours of playing, red eyes, irritability, you should limit their gameplay. World of Warcraft and Sony Everquest are some of the most intensive games around and require years of playing in order to attain a level of status. Children in this case are playing these type games for countless hours. There was a story about a individual that actually committed suicide due to his excessive addiction to Everquest. - For additional security you can password your computer, this will enable you to be in charge and limit your childrens use of the computer without your supervision.
- You can also disable the internet while your away by either disabling your router or cable modem or some other program installed on the computer such as Cybersitter or some other third party application.
Please, {Shock'N'Awe} wants our kids to be safe and lead a long and productive life. Gaming is fun, but should not be the focus in their life. We need to have a balance in life, experiencing a multitude of activities and enjoying the time that we have in this world.
